  • Spring is the optimal time for painting in the Bay Area.

    Here’s why:

    • Temperature — Paint manufacturers typically specify application between 50–85°F. Bay Area springs sit comfortably in that range. Summer, particularly in inland areas, can push well above 90°F, which causes paint to dry too fast, compromising adhesion and increasing the likelihood of brush marks, lap lines, and surface bubbling.

    • The fog factor — The Bay Area's coastal fog in summer (June Gloom) is actually a problem for exterior painting. High moisture in the air and on surfaces in the early morning limits the usable working window considerably, and can interfere with proper curing on water-based coatings.

    • Direct sun intensity — Summer sun in the Bay Area is intense, especially on south and west-facing surfaces (where siding temperatures can reach up to 140°F). Paint applied in direct, hot sun skins over on the outside before the inner film cures properly, weakening the bond to the substrate.

    • Spring is genuinely ideal here — Mild temperatures, lower humidity than coastal summer mornings, and longer daylight hours without the heat extremes create close to optimal conditions for paint adhesion and film formation.

    • Summer, Fall and Winter - while spring represents the optimal window for exterior painting, experienced painters can achieve excellent results in other seasons with the right preparation and materials. Summer painting works well in the Bay Area's coastal and milder microclimates — the key is scheduling work early in the morning before surfaces heat up, and avoiding direct sun on south and west-facing walls during peak afternoon hours. Fall is actually an underrated season for exterior work — temperatures remain mild well into November in the Bay Area, humidity is typically low, and the softer light makes color selection easier. Winter painting is generally reserved for urgent situations, but the Bay Area's relatively mild winters make it more viable here than almost anywhere else in the country — provided work is scheduled around rain, temperatures stay consistently above 50°F, and surfaces are given adequate dry time between coats. In all cases, the right product selection, surface preparation, and timing within the day matter as much as the season itself.
